Master of Arts and Physical Education, MA

Graduate Brock University
Decision Date: May 12, 2025

The Master’s programs (MA/MSc) in the Department of Kinesiology at Brock University are centred on the development of knowledge through the systematic evaluation of evidence related to human movement and performance, and health and physical education. They provide students with intensive research training and the fundamental educational background skills necessary to critically examine issues relevant to both kinesiology (MSc) and physical education (MA). Coursework emphasizes a broad approach to the subject area and various subdisciplines (e.g., anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology, sport/exercise psychology, physical literacy), with particular attention to techniques and application of research methodology, current paradigms and theories, and related conceptual, philosophical, and theoretical issues. The thesis work will allow students the opportunity to explore a particular question/issue in depth, under the mentorship of an individual Faculty of Applied Health Sciences (FAHS) faculty member. Students will achieve an in-depth knowledge of conceptual and theoretical issues, and develop superior research skills and an understanding of the scientific process.

The objectives of the Master’s Programs are as follows:

• To foster students’ ability to do high-quality, scientifically rigorous research;

• To expand students’ understanding of concepts, theories, and research practices in their discipline;

• To provide students with the knowledge base and analytical skills to undertake research in the

various fields of applied health science;

• To enhance students’ abilities to apply and disseminate new knowledge and practices to colleagues, practitioners, policymakers and other professionals in applied health sciences.

Master of Professional Education, MPEd

Graduate Brock University
Decision Date: April 25, 2025

The MPEd program provides students with flexible, rigorous, professional graduate experience
designed for working education professionals. The program consists of five credits earned by
completing six courses which are delivered entirely asynchronously online over 2 years (6
semesters). Students can choose from three different fields of study:

1. Creating Happy, Healthy, Just Educational Spaces, focusing on ensuring learning
environments are safe and socially just spaces.
2. Living and Learning in a Connected World, focusing on digital innovation and learning
in multimodal contexts.
3. Educational Leadership for People, Planet and Prosperity, focusing on ways that
leaders can respond to the myriad challenges facing the world by fostering life-sustaining
and life-serving approaches to collective wellbeing for humans and the
more-than-human world.

Two courses, MPED 5F01 (Practice-based Research) and MPED 5L95 (Capstone project) are
required in all three fields of study. Each consists of four required courses that are specific to
that field of study. With all the courses being compulsory there is a set course sequence each incoming student will need to follow, with the intake of new students occurring each year in
September. There will only be one intake – in the Fall – for this program.

Master of Sport Management, MSM

Graduate Brock University
Decision Date: August 23, 2024

Doctorate in Applied Behaviour Analysis, AbaD

Graduate Brock University
Decision Date: November 29, 2023

Brock’s Doctorate in Applied Behaviour Analysis (AbaD) is a professional doctorate with a complementary trajectory to our current Master of Applied Disability Studies degree, which has a specialization in ABA. Currently, there are no ABA doctoral programs in Ontario and only one other in Canada. Education in ABA leads to professional certification for most in the field. The program will provide a unique ABAI accredited program in which our graduates are successful in becoming Board Certified Behavior Analysts at the doctoral level (i.e., BCBA-DTM).Faculty will conduct cutting-edge interdisciplinary clinical research and train our students as scientist-practitioners. Outcomes here will include: community/partnership grants obtained; collaborations with hospitals, community agencies, and other researchers in different disciplines; faculty and student presentations and publications, and graduates continuing to engage in scholarly activities (e.g., clinical research, teaching, knowledge transfer) as practitioners. The program will provide a variety of experiential learning opportunities to our students and augment existing behaviour analytic services to the community through a Brock University ADS clinic offering specialized clinical services and practica with community behaviour analysts. The AbaD program will offer professionals in the field the advanced degree that they will need for growth and progression in the profession.

Applied Behaviour Analysis, PhD

Graduate Brock University
Decision Date: December 16, 2022

Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) is a branch of the science of behaviour that involves a systematic approach to analyzing behaviour and solving practical problems to improve the human condition. ABA-based interventions have been empirically shown to be effective in treating a wide variety of problems related to child behaviour, youth anti-social behaviour, parenting, substance abuse, mental health issues, dementia, occupational health and safety, organizational management, sport, among many other areas. Brock’s new PhD in (ABA) will help address an important gap in clinical training and education in ABA in the province. Currently, there are no ABA doctoral programs in Ontario and only one other in Canada. Education in ABA leads to professional certification and accreditation for most people in the field. Adequately trained faculty with doctoral degrees in ABA are required to teach the courses that are needed for Association for Behaviour Analysis International (ABAI) accreditation. The program is consistent with our mandate of “bettering the lives of people with disabilities through quality education.” Behavioural interventions for persons with disabilities will figure prominently in coursework, practica, research projects, and PhD theses.
